Pool Cue Shaft Dent Removal

Pool Cue Shaft Dent Removal

Warning: This method involves use of liquid and the method of having the wood soak it up. This method is highly debated, and is advised against by some pool cue experts. The article is intended for informational purposes only, and the advice of a professional should be obtained.

It should also be noted that this method can not be used for scratches. It is meant for dents only, which are actually just areas of compressed wood. Scratches on the other hand, are abrasions where some of the wood has likely been scratched off. Also, this is not meant to be similar to the "wet-towel and iron" method, which generally allows too much moisture in to the wood causing it to warp.

Pool Cue Shaft Dent Removal

If you own your own pool cue, and play pool on regular basis, chances are that your pool cue shaft has been subject to numerous dings. This article will cover a do-it-yourself pool cue shaft dent removal and repair technique. It is a fairly quick and easy fix.

  1. To begin the pool cue shaft dent removal, you should sand it very lightly with a nylon pool cue shaft cleaner or a 2000+ grit sandpaper. Note that this is an extremely fine grit paper, and nothing less should be used. This will remove any build-up, wax, or varnish that may prevent water absorption.
  2. Next place a small drop of saliva over the pool cue shaft dent. The reason spit has been recommended in this case is because when using water, it runs off too quickly.
  3. Take a lighted cigarette and use the heat from the lit end. Hover the lit end about 1/2 inch away while moving it back and forth over the dent until the saliva is completely dried up. It is important to pay close attention here, since leaving the cigarette tip in one spot can cause discoloration. The heat from the cigarette tip is meant to cause the shaft to absorb the moisture from the saliva. This in turn causes the wood around the dent to swell back to its original shape. A curling iron can be used in place of a cigarette for pool cue shaft dent removal, but it isn't likely that you'll have a curling iron with you at the pool hall.

Thanks for the tip! I tried this on my pool cue and it worked like a charm. After the dent was gone I simply used 2000 grit emery cloth to smooth the pool cue shaft and then resealed the shaft with cue silk. Now it is like new, so thanks again.
