Anchor Space Definition

Anchor space refers to the square box that is drawn on a balkline billiard table. The anchor space is seven inches squared in size, and runs from the termination of a balkline with the table's rail. It thus, defines a restricted space in which only three points can be scored before the shooting player drives at least one ball from the anchor space area. The anchor space was specifically created to counteract the effectiveness of the chuck nurse technique. Interestingly enough, the chuck nurse technique was developed to defeat a similar parkers box. The parkers box was developed to counteract the effectiveness of repetitive and long runs where players use the anchor nurse.
