Definition of Backspin

Backspin is a billiards term that is a part of Billiard Technique Terminology.

Backspin is a method used to manipulate the position of the cue ball after it has struck the intended object ball. It causes the object ball to spin backwards from the original direction of the shot and thus, when it strikes the object ball and loses its momentum, the backward spin friction causes it to begin to roll back toward the shooter. This is usually done in a draw shot, and is accomplished by hitting the cue ball slightly below center.

See: equator, draw, draw shot, back spin, drawback, draw back, bottom spin, bottomspin, screw, screw back, bottom for more on the meaning of "Backspin".
