Definition of Balkline
Balkline is a billiards term that is a part of Cue Sport Game Name Terminology.
There are two usages of the cue sport term balkline.
The first is that it is the name of a type of carom billiard game. Balkline billiards is a game that was created to prevent or eliminate extremely high runs in straight rail billiards.
The second usage for the term balkline is to refer to the horizontal line that is drawn from a point on a billiard table's rail to the exact spot on the opposite rail. The purpose of the balkline is to mark the area of a balkline table in which only a specified number of caroms can be scored by the shooting player before he or she must cause one ball to leave that area.
The term balkline is sometimes used interchangeably with the term baulk line.
