Definition of Bar Table

Bar Table is a billiards term that is a part of Pool Table Terminology.

Refers to pool tables found in clubs, pubs, taverns, and bars. Generally, these tables are coin-operated, have a ball return system or gully system, and are usually smaller than regulation-sized tables. The standard size of a coin operated billiard table is 3.5 Ft. X 7 ft. Although 4 ft. X 8 ft. And even 3 ft. X 6 ft. Examples can also be found. North American brands of bar pool tables have pocket proportions which have opposite characteristics than those of regular billiard tables. The side pockets are tight, while the corners are more generous than those of pool hall tables. Because bar tables are coin-operated and capture pocketed balls, they employ one of several mechanisms to return a scratched cue ball. The over sized and extra-dense cue ball methods have largely been phased out because these cue balls do not play correctly. This was especially true with regard to cut shots and stop/draw. To combat this problem, most modern bar tables employ a magnet and a regulation or near-regulation size and weight cue ball with an iron core, to separate the cue ball from the others and return it to the players. It has also been said that the cloth used on bar tables is generally inferior in that it plays "slow" and that english does not "take" enough. Also the rails are not as responsive as those on regular billiard tables.

See: gully system, ball return, ball return system, drop pockets, gully table for more on the meaning of "Bar Table".
