Bottomspin is a cue sport term for backspin. It is referred to sometimes as bottomspin because the cue ball is struck below the equator and thus, spins back toward the bottom. The term is not one of proper English, and thus, is considered by many to be a slang term. When the cue ball is shot as such to create bottomspin, it generated friction caused by the spin. This friction is what causes the cue ball to either begin rolling back or to come to a sudden stop when the object ball is struck.
