Definition of Break

Break is a billiards term that is a part of Game Rule Terminology.

Break has several meanings in cue sport, which are all closely related. The first meaning of break refers to the initial shot of any billiards game that is intended to break the racked balls apart. Please note that various pool games have specific requirements regarding how many balls must touch a cushion in order for a break to be legal. If the breaking player neglects to meet these requirements, he or she has committed a breaking violation. Also note that the penalty for an illegal break varies among games. The second meaning of the term break is related to snooker and english billiards. In this context, break describes a series of consecutive pots by a player during a single turn in the game of snooker. Break has a third context which relates to carom billiard games. In this context, a break is the first point attempt as made by a player shooting from an unvarying cue ball and object ball placement.
