Clean is a billiard term that has several definitions. In British usage, the term clean is used to refer to an object ball that is potted straight in and that does not touch either knuckle of the pocket. In North American usage, the term clean is used to advise that when shooting the eight ball, it must go into the pocket without contacting any other balls. This is a common house rule. Essentially, the term clean describes the pocketing of an object ball that goes straight into the pocket without touching anything, including another ball or one of the knuckles, or nipples as some billiard players would call them. The degree of clean will depend on specific house rules. It may also be used to call out a specific degree of clean above the already specified degree of clean.
