A dead rail is a cushion or cushions on a pool table that is no longer elastic. Dead rail may also refer to a cushion that may simply be coming lose from the rail. Both of these issues can cause balls to rebound with less velocity or energy than normal.
Forget it Jeff. The rail is dead, you are never going to be able to make that shot.
