Welcome to the billiard, pool, and snooker glossary of terms. This is the definition of Deflection as it relates to cue sports. You can also view the entire billiard dictionary.
Deflection is a term that refers to the displacement of the path of the cue ball from the parallel trajectory formed by the cue stick's direction of travel during the execution of the shot. As the degree of english applied to the cue ball increases, so does the deflection, and vice versa. Any shot where english is applied to the cue ball, deflection will take place. Deflection is sometimes called squirt in North America.
I can't get the cue ball to go straight. It must be deflection from some english on the cue ball.
