Welcome to the billiard, pool, and snooker glossary of terms. This is the definition of Drawback as it relates to cue sports. You can also view the entire billiard dictionary.
Drawback is another, less common, term for backspin. The word drawback is derived from the fact that by applying backspin to the cue ball during a draw shot, the cue ball draws back toward the shooter. The term is not one of proper English, and thus, is considered by many to be a slang term. Drawback is achieved by striking the cue ball below the equator, which is the horizontal center point. This causes the cue ball to enter in to a backward spin, causing friction, which servers to slow the cue ball to a stop, or cause it to begin a backward roll.
