Welcome to the billiard, pool, and snooker glossary of terms. This is the definition of Hook Rest as it relates to cue sports. You can also view the entire billiard dictionary.
A hook rest is a piece of snooker equipment that is similar to a mechanical bridge. The hook rest has just recently been endorsed by the WPBSA for usage in tournament play. The hook rest is like a standard mechanical bridge with the head aligned with the shaft, but different in that the last 12 inches of the shaft is curved. The curve accommodates positioning of the hook rest around an obstructive cue ball which would otherwise require a spider rest or a swan with extenders. These tools are less desirable than the hook rest since they give the shooting player less control.
I think it is time we invest in some hook rests for our snooker tables. Some of the customers have been asking about them.
