Welcome to the billiard, pool, and snooker glossary of terms. This is the definition of In Turn as it relates to cue sports. You can also view the entire billiard dictionary.
In turn refers to a situation where a ball has a handicap applied to it in the game of nine ball. This handicap designates that particular ball in turn, meaning that it must be made in rotation when it is the lowest numbered object ball remaining on the billiard table, and that it can not be pocketed for a win earlier in the game via a carom, combination, or any other type of shot. An example of the in turn handicap would be when a player is spotted the 6 ball, he or she may only win by pocketing balls 1 through 5. The phrase in turn is not a common phrase in North America.
No Allison, you have to hit the 7 ball in turn, you can't pocket it before you pocket balls 1 through 6.
