Welcome to the billiard, pool, and snooker glossary of terms. This is the definition of Insurance Ball as it relates to cue sports. You can also view the entire billiard dictionary.
In one pocket, when running balls into your pocket, an insurance ball is a ball that is left intentionally playable, while playing position or breaking up other balls that do not so readily guarantee another easy shot. The insurance ball is easily sinkable from most of the billiard table's positions, but is generally left alone by the player if possible. It is used when the player simply has no other options. Insurance ball placement is normally normally right near the jaws of a pocket and could easily be potted with a tap of the cue ball from any angle.
It looks like Jessica is going to be using the 2 ball near the corner pocket as his insurance ball.
