Welcome to the billiard, pool, and snooker glossary of terms. This is the definition of Lagging for the Break as it relates to cue sports. You can also view the entire billiard dictionary.
Lagging for the break is an exercise that is performed by each player or team before each frame begins. It's purpose is to determine which player or team will perform the opening break shot. Players simultaneously shoot a cue ball or other ball down the table, off the top tail, and back toward the bottom rail. The goal is to have the ball come to rest as closely as possible to the bottom rail, either on its way back to, or after softly rebounding off of, the bottom rail. Normally, the player whose ball comes to rest closest to the bottom rail has choice of break.
We'll decide who will take the break shot by lagging for the break.
