Welcome to the billiard, pool, and snooker glossary of terms. This is the definition of Let Out as it relates to cue sports. You can also view the entire billiard dictionary.
Let out refers to the premature ending of a set on which money is riding. The winning player can let out the other player if the winning player no longer wishes to complete the set. For example, if there is $2300 riding on a match, and the winning player is way ahead, he or she may let out the losing player now for $1800. It has been noted in some billiard directories, such as wikipedia, that the let out is meant to save the pride of the losing player. This does not make sense, because the player still loses.
Look Jeff, you are losing badly at this half way point, and I really want to go out with Lori tonight. Why don't we organize a let out at 50% of the original bet, where I'll let you out now for 5 bills. You are probably going to lose anyway, so do this and save yourself a few hundred dollars.
