The billiard term match refers, in general terms, to the general competition between two pool players or teams. Each match consists of a set or predetermined number of frames, rounds, or games. Billiards sometimes utilizes specialized match formatting where there is no predetermined or set number of games or rounds. Such as example of the specialized match is the ahead race and the race. Alternatively, the term match may also refer to one gambling player raising the stakes to a higher level. To match a bet in billiards is to call a raise in poker. In some circles, a match is referring to first billiards player to win nine games.
