Welcome to the billiard, pool, and snooker glossary of terms. This is the definition of Miss as it relates to cue sports. You can also view the entire billiard dictionary.
A miss is a form of snooker rule whereby when a player commits a foul and leaves the shot/foul safe, his or her opponent may either force the shooting player to make the shot again, or at least as precisely as the snooker referee is able to recreate the ball positions, or, the opponent may proceed to the table for his or her inning. A miss refers to a controversial rule for which the intent is to account for intentional fouls, which happens to be a generally frowned upon process. The miss only normally applies to the situation where the player has been put in by the opponent after a safety. In such situations, the snooker referee generally calls a miss on an attempt to get out of a safety that fails such as a snooker. If a player fails to make a shot three separate times while he or she is not snookered, that player forfeits the frame. Because of this, snooker players will normally play a relatively easy hit that is likely to leave a chance for the opponent on the third attempt.
That's not fair; I want to invoke the miss rule.
