Position play involves consistently controlling the movement of the cue ball and to a lesser extent, other object balls, after the cue ball strikes the object ball, in order to gain a subsequent favorable shooting position. Position play is considered a technique that is employed by skilled players with a high level of knowledge on angles, post-impact trajectory, ball speed, and many other factors. The goal of position play is normally to ensure that the next shot is as easy as possible.
Position play is a very important offensive billiard strategy.
