In one pocket, to protect a ball or balls would be to block your opponent's easy access to remove threats you have established near your pocket. To protect a lead would be to play the score by effectively making it difficult for your opponent to score enough points to get back in the game. To protect a layout advantage would be to prevent your opponent from neutralizing a table layout that favors you.
I have to focus because I want to protect my lead here.
