Definition of Push

Push is a billiards term that is a part of Billiard Technique Terminology.

There are several definitions for the term push as related to cue sports. As Bob Jewitt has said in his article "What is a push shot": There is some variation in usage of this term, so you need to make it clear which way you are using the word.

  1. A push is any shot where the cue ball is frozen to the object ball. The balls remain in contact slightly longer due to friction.

  2. A push shot is a shot where the cue tip remains in contact with the cue ball longer than is appropriate for a normal stroke and legal shot. A push shot is not generally allowed and results in a foul. A push shot, in this sense, is committed if the following occurs:

    • If the cue stick contacts the cue ball more than once on a shot
    • If the cue ball is close to but not touching an object ball and the cue tip is still on the cue ball when the cue ball contacts that object ball

  3. Bob Jewitt's definition:

At pool, a push shot involves a very special kind of stroke and is played when the cue ball is frozen to the object ball -- this stroke is a foul. (At pool it is legal to shoot towards a ball the cue ball is frozen to, assuming no other foul, and with a normal stroke.) In a push shot, the tip is brought slowly, slowly, very slowly up to the cue ball until it is just touching or about to touch, and then the tip is accelerated for the shot.

  4. (9 Ball) Push may also refer to a push out in the game of 9-ball. This is refers to the shot immediately following a break when a player is not required to strike an object ball to play a safety. If this shot is called in advance, then the requirement of ball and rail contact are waived.

See: pushout, push out, push shot for more on the meaning of "Push".
