Welcome to the billiard, pool, and snooker glossary of terms. This is the definition of Rail First as it relates to cue sports. You can also view the entire billiard dictionary.
In one pocket, rail first is similar to kick, except rail first implies to lightly bank the cue ball off the adjacent rail that runs most parallel to your shot, while still striking the object ball generally from the front. This is often used to achieve different position than what would be available by shooting directly at the object ball, or to avoid an inevitable kiss or pocket scratch if the object ball was hit directly.
Why don't you approach the shot rail first? It can't hurt, because you have nothing else, and it actually looks achievable from here.
The rail first definition was entered on 5/18/2006 and was updated on 10/24/2007 9:49:52 AM. It is a cue sport term that is related to billiard technique. It was entered in to the database by the Billiards Forum Editor.
