Welcome to the billiard, pool, and snooker glossary of terms. This is the definition of Slate as it relates to cue sports. You can also view the entire billiard dictionary.
Slate is the heavy and finely milled rock and is the desired material for the bed of a pool table beneath the cloth. The slate of a good pool table is between 1inch and 1.5 inches thick and accounts for the majority of a pool table's weight. Each slate normally weighs in excess of 800 pounds. Major supplying countries of slate for the cue sport industry include China, India, and Brazil. Some lower end tables do not include a slate bed, but rather have no slate material whatsoever, or have an artificial slate such as slatrol. Generally though, the thicker the slate, the higher the quality of the pool table.
What thickness of slate does your new pool table have?
