Slop is a billiard term that refers to a type of play that is loose with regards to calling shots and to some of the rules of that game including the relaxation of some of the foul rules. The term slop comes from the word sloppy, which is how a game played as the slop version may look. Playing slop means that players do not have to call any of their shots where regular rules may otherwise require. Slop is played normally by inexperience or unskilled billiard or pool players because it makes the game move along at a better pace. Slop is generally frowned upon by most experienced players. Slop may also refer to a slop shot, which is a shot that is made or pocketed through pure luck.
I was playing at JJ's club the other day and they were playing a slop version of 8 ball. I asked if we could play no slop, but they insisted playing slop because most were not experienced enough.
