Smash through is a term in billiards that refers to the effect of the shooting of regulation weighted billiard object balls as such that the cue ball is moved forward to take over, occupy, or move ahead of the original position of the target object ball. Smash through occurs on stop shots or even draw shots as the result of the mass of the cue ball exceeding the mass of the object ball. Understanding smash through is critical for those players who wish to become masters of position plan. Smash through, for example, can be used by the shooting player to slightly bump other object balls that are near the target object ball. Smash through is also the cause of, or adds risk to pocketing straight on shots using a stop shot instead of through cheating the pocket. It does this because of the high chance of scratching on the cue ball during such a shot.
I don't understand why those straight on shots I've been trying result in a scratch. Why, it's because of smash through caused by the weighting of the balls.
