Spot - Billiard Term Definition

Welcome to the billiard, pool, and snooker glossary of terms. This is the definition of Spot as it relates to cue sports. You can also view the entire billiard dictionary.

Spot Definition

The term spot as related to cue sports has numerous meanings. There are about ten ways that the word can be used, each of which has a slightly different meaning.

  1. A spot is another name for the diamond markings that are embedded in a pool table's rail.
  2. Spot refers to a specific handicap given by one player to another player.
  3. Spot refers to the act of placing the cue ball on, or as near to as possible, the head spot after a scratch by an opponent.
  4. Spot refers to the three unmarked points of intersection on a cue sport table, such as the center spot, foot spot, and the head spot.
  5. In the games of straight pool, eight ball, and one pocket, spot refers to the act of giving a handicap to an opponent where they must make fewer balls for a win.
  6. In snooker, a spot refers to any of the six designated points on which a colour ball is replaced after leaving the playing surface when potted.
  7. In nine ball, to spot a player a certain ball means that you are giving them the benefit of also having that specific extra ball, on top of the 9 ball, with which to win if pocketed.
  8. In UK eight ball, the term spot refers to any of the groups of 7 object balls that are solid in color with only the ball's circled number.
  9. In pool games, to spot means to return an illegally pocketed ball to the foot spot.
  10. In the game of snooker, to spot means to return a colour ball to it's designated spot on the snooker table.
