A Stake is a portion of cash or collateral put up as a wager or bet in a billiard match. If you are a backer for a player, and put up $100 for that player, your stake is considered to be that $100 dollars. An investor can also stake a player as an investment, in return for a cut of the profits. The term stake in billiards may also simply refer to the amount of money wagered on a billiard, pool, or snooker game.
I'm going to stake Jim's game tonight, because he is a sure thing.
