A stay shot is a long distance shot executed to pot a ball that is close to a pocket through the use of heavy topspin so that when teh cue ball strikes the cushion, if comes off to a quick stop due to the counteracting spin. A stay shot is an exhibition shot, and is not used in competitive play due to the difficulty and unpredictability of the shot.
