In one pocket, take a scratch means to intentionally foul, generally by very lightly touching the cue ball with the cue stick; if you are trying to leave the ball right where it is; or by rolling or nudging it to a more desirable location, but without regard for legally striking a ball and/or a cushion, thus accepting a foul penalty.
