Welcome to the billiard, pool, and snooker glossary of terms. This is the definition of Touching Ball as it relates to cue sports. You can also view the entire billiard dictionary.
Touching ball is a situation in snooker where the shot begins with the cue ball resting against, and touching, another ball. If this other ball is a legal ball, or ball on, for that player, simply hitting the cue ball away from it is sufficient enough to say that the cue ball hit it, and thus, that the shot was legal. However, if the ball moves, a push shot is deemed to have occurred, and thus, the shot is assessed a foul. It would also be a foul if the touching ball was not a legal ball.
You never really hit anything after you made the shot, but since the cue ball was touching another legal ball, it was considered a touching ball situation, and thus, was a legal shot.
