World Championships Definition

The world championships are the largest worldwide billiards competitions, held annually. Here is a sample of how the 2006 world championships went down. Days 1 to 4 - Sat 2, Sun 3, Mon 4, Tues 5 July (112 matches per day/448 in total) First Round Group Play - Race to 5 - Alternate breaks For the first four days of competition, the 128 players are divided into 16 Groups of 8 players and within each Group, all players play each other once. Two points are awarded for a win and at the end of the Group stages, the top four players move into the last 64 knock-out, with the bottom four eliminated. If two players are equal on points, the higher position goes to the player scoring the most racks overall. If this is equal, it will go to the player conceding the least racks. In the event of this being the same, the higher position will go to the player who won the Group match between the two. Day 5 - Wed 6 July (32 matches) - Second Round (last 64) - Race to 10 - Winner breaks. The draw for the last 64 is made by compiling a league table of the qualifying players using their results in the First Round Group Play and arranging them in order of achievement during the First Round Group Play. The players winning their Groups will be at the top and players in fourth place will be at the bottom. Player 1 will then play player 64, player 2 will face player 63 and so on. This will then make up the single elimination bracket. Day 6 - Thurs 7 July (16 matches) - Third Round (last 32) - Race to 10 - Winner breaks. Day 7 - Fri 8 July (8 matches) - Fourth Round (last 16) - Race to 11 - Winner breaks Day 8 - Sat 9 July (6 matches) - Quarter Finals - Race to 11 - Winner breaks. Semi Finals - Race to 11 - Winner breaks Day 9 - Sun 10 July (1 match) - Final - Race to 17 - Winner breaks
