Amos and Andy Board Billiard Rules

Below are the rules for the Amos and Andy billiard game. The rules have been transcribed directly from the rule sheet that shipped with the game many years ago.

Amos & Andy Billiard Board Game Rules

Place Amos & Andy game board at the head end of the table and rack the 15 numbered balls, in a pyramid, on the "spot" at the other end of the table. (As for rotation pool)

Place eleve shake balls ("pills"), numbered 1 through 15, in the shake bottle. Each player receives one of the "pills" which he keeps concealed until he either wins of leaves the game.

Each player gets one shot per inning, in turn, and may play any numbered ball without calling his shot.

The first player in each game breaks the balls from anywhere between the "string line" and the edge of the Amos & Andy Board. This must be done with sufficient force to drive at least one object ball to a cushion rail.

Only object balls that are lodged in holes on the game board count for score. If the player makes more than one ball on a shot, he immediately chooses the ball he wants to count and disregards the others. Numbered balls and remaining on the game board, outside of a hole, and balls shot into pockets are immediately spotted on the "break-spot" at the foot of the table or in a frozen line directly behind any ball that may be occupying the spot at that time.

If the cue ball comes to rest on the Amos and Andy Board or in a pocket, the next player shoots from anywhere back of the string line, in front of the game board. The winner is any player holding a pill whose number exactly matches the total of the numbered balls plus the number of hole in which it is made, regardless of who made the shot, and the game is over. Example: any player makes number two ball in number four hole. Player holding pill number six wins. (2 ball plus 4 hole equals 6) another example: someone shoots number 12 ball into the 0 hole, player with number 12 pill wins the game.

Player making any object ball in either the Amos and Andy holes wins the game and the game is over.

Only the winning player exchanges his "pill" for a new one before starting to play the next game.

If no player has won one all the object balls have been made, rack the balls or a double-header game. The winner of this double-header game is considered the winner of the preceding (no decision) game.

Amos and Andy Board Billiard Rules History

This blurb is from Duane Hess, a Billiards Forum reader who sent us a copy of these rules. He will build a board for you for $300 USD. You can contact him via the forum. His member name is homerlee.

I searched for days and says on the internet and couldn’t find anything on the game. I have a Steepleton table, so I called the Steepleton store in Lexington KY, where I bought my table and the owner had this copy he faxed to me. I figured Steepleton has been making tables since 1910 so they might have some info. It appears that the sheet he sent me is the one that came with the boards when they shipped. Along with the numbers on the board there are 3 other holes, one marked Amos, one marked Andy and one marked Amos & Andy, If you place a ball in the Amos or the Andy it’s an automatic winner, if you place a ball in the one marked Amos & Andy it pays double.

The official Amos and Andy Board Billiard Rules are predominently observed in North America.

I too played many a game of Amos and Andy growing up.

My company, a while back, we partnered with BaKno on a Keno Pool game for the PC, MAC. We modified the rules slightly and used less holes to make the game more enjoyable.
