Gabriel Dumont's Pool Table

Gabriel Dumont's Pool Table

Gabriel Dumont's Pool Table

This is a story about Gabriel Dumont's pool table, born December, 1837, was a leader of the Metis people who occupied what is now known as Canada's western provinces.

Gabriel Dumont and his Billiard Table

Gabriel Dumont was elected to the presidency of the commune of St-Laurent in 1873, after which he remained a leader among the Metis of the South Saskatchewan River. Dumont was adjutant general in the provisional Metis government declared in Saskatchewan in 1885. He led the Metis forces in the North West Resistance (North-West Rebellion) of 1885. He was critical in Louis Riel's return back to Canada, a mission performed in order to draw the government's attention to the troubles of the Metis people.

Gabriel Dumont was the grandson of Jean-Baptiste Dumont's and his Sarcee-Crow wife's, who raised all of their three sons, Isidore, Gabriel and Jean, as traders and hunters on the Saskatchewan River. The Dumont family moved to Regina, Saskatchewan in 1848. Gabriel Dumont, and his older brother Isidore, became buffalo hunters on the open plains of modern United States and Canada.

Gabriel Dumont became fluent in six languages, and became a guide with an established a reputation, a hunter and an interpreter. He had a famed reputation for his gambling, playing of billiards, and drinking. He also participated in skirmishes with Indian tribes, including the Blackfoot tribe and the Sioux tribe.

Gabriel wed Madeleine Welkie, the daughter of a Scottish-Indian trader in 1858. Four years later in 1862 he was elected chief of his Metis band. He led the band to the North Saskatchewan River, where they made a brief settlement near Fort Carlton. Their temporary settlement was moved in 1868, when the band established a permanent settlement near Batoche on the South Saskatchewan River.

In 1886, Gabriel Dumont became more famous as he joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show as a crack marksman. He was also employed as a speaker in a series of lectures in Montreal in 1888. In 1893 he retired to Batoche and dictated two memoirs of his experiences in the rebellion. He died May 19, 1906, and now has a French first language high school named after him.

Gabriel Dumont is related to billiards and pool because of an antique pool table that was once used at a "stopping place" in Batoche that Gabriel Dumont owned. The table was looted and hauled away by Canadian soldiers after their victory in Batoche. Billiard collectors and history buffs saw the antique pool table returned to Batouche Saskatchewan in mid 2006.

You are on a billiard and cue-sport website. This is not a homework help site, and definitely not a site about historical people.

Read the page carefully and you will see that the article is really about an antique billiard table, and not "why Gabriel Dumont is famous".
