In a statement made to the Telegram, a spokesman for the Boston Billiard Club of Worcester, MA said it is closing its doors on October 9, 2010, ending a 20-year run because of lagging business.

The 454 Grove St. Boston Billiard Club, which was a leased location, was hurt badly by the recession according to management. They added that the restaurant segment was affected sooner and more severely than other parts of the retail sector.

Brian E. Hanify, a spokesman for Eeskay MA Inc., said:

“We had a fairly sizable operation with a large footprint and overhead to cover. We tried to make it work as long as we could.”

Eeskay MA Inc. bought the Worcester, MA location of the Boston Billiard Club in February of 2009 from GLM Entertainment Inc.

The company will continue to operate the Boston Billiard Club in Nashua, NH under it's parent company Eeskay NH, Inc.

Founded in 1990, the Boston Billiard Club had six locations at it's peak:

The Boston, Danbury, and West Springfield clubs were closed in 2009 the Warwick, RI location was purchased as a separate business by a manager, Mr. Hanify said.

Hanify said that Eeskay MA Inc. and Eeskay NH Inc. bought the Worcester and Nashua clubs from GLM Entertainment Inc. in 2009, respectively. He said that the owners could see no economic recovery in sight and that businesses in the service industry are facing challenging times.

“The restaurant industry as a whole has taken a beating,” he said. “On top of that, Worcester is just full of restaurants, bars and entertainment venues all competing for a shrinking pool of money.”

Mike Lincoln, General Manager of the Worcester location said in a statement to the Telegram that he hoped the economic climate would regain it's health to the point where the company might reopen in Worcester.

“It is a sad day for Boston Billiard Club,” Mr. Lincoln said. “We have enjoyed the friends and business partners that we have made over the last 20 years.”

The company will help the 36 full- and part-time employees at the Worcester location to find other work, Mr. Hanify said.
