Pool Table Weight

Pool Table Weight

One of the first things you should consider when designing a home billiard room is the weight of the table, along the weight of the other billiard accessories, billiard room furniture, and the weight of the people who will be enjoying the billiard room.

Pool Table Weight in Designing a Home Billiard Room

Since a billiard table can weigh in excess of 1000 lbs (Think of the weight of approximately five men), and because there will likely be numerous players and spectators in your home billiard room at the same time, you will need to ensure that the structure of the floor can support that kind of weight. Having a properly supported floor will also ensure a level table at all times, ensure that your table always plays and feels properly. Floors with inadequate support will flex when players and spectators move about the room. As mentioned earlier, this has a negative impact on the balance of the table. In order to beef up floor support and stabilize the area under and around your pool table, you can do various things such as adding extra beams and posts, or consult with your local home builders. You can check your local building codes to find out the appropriate support needed depending on room size and total estimated weight.

If you are creating a home billiard room in your basement, recreation room, or in the lowest level of your home, there may not be the need to reinforce the floor. However, one should be cautious if the basement recreation room floors are built up slightly from the concrete basement floor, and covered with carpet or hardwood. Usually, under the carpeting or hardwood, the floor will have been raised by a few inches with small pieces of wood strapping and Styrofoam. (This is referred to as a "sub-floor" and may vary with the age of the construction.) You may have to investigate this and reinforce the area directly under where the pool table, snooker table, or billiard table will lie, as well as the entire area of play. If there is no reinforcement under this entire area, the floor will sag and flex slightly causing the table to shift and become unleveled. To check for this, you should consult your local licensed carpenter.

If your home billiard room is to be installed in an upper level of your home, you may have decided to add additional beams and posts. For this job, the equipment and supplies can normally be purchased from most local home improvement retailers, and should be installed by a professional. In this scenario, like the previous, adequate support for the area directly under the where the pool table, snooker table, or billiard table will lie, as well as the entire area of play in paramount. See some images and tutorials below on how to achieve this task:

One final thing to keep in mind when considering floor support in the design of your home billiard room is that all of this should be done before the furniture arrives. Proper planning when designing your home billiard room is the key maximizing the enjoyability of the room. Finally, when considering all of the factors and solutions outlined above, be sure to select the right building and design contractors to consult and to perform the work. You can visit web sites such as the National Association of Home Builders (www.nahb.org) and American Society of Interior Designers ( www.asid.org) to find a local home renovation and construction professional. They will be able to help you design your home billiard room around the details outlined above and ensure that the home billiard room has adequate support for the weight of the billiard table, other furniture, and your guests.

Very informative article on pool table weight and supporting the flooring underneath. It looks like I'll have to do some reinforcement before I put in my upstairs billiard room.

If you are putting a billiard table on a concrete floor with in-floor heat, it will throw the pool table off balance all winter long because of the expansion in the concrete. I learned that the hard way.
