Across the String refers to a makeshift scoring mechanism that uses a wire or string, hung at each end above, or near the billiard table. The wire has discs that are used to represent a winning billiard game for each player. When a player wins a game in a match, a disc is moved from the middle of the string, "across the string" to the shooting player's tally. The discs are literally slid across the strings.
Joe pocketed the 8 ball with grace to win the match, and so they slid one across the string.
The term "across the string" is considered to be a slang term related to scoring. The across the string definition was entered on 3/21/2007 and was updated on 10/29/2007 9:47:57 AM.
