Beating the opponent to the shot refers to the act of coming out of an exchange of safeties with the first legitimate chance to score. In some safety situations, each player can do nothing but return the safety. This continues until one player makes a mistake and leaves the opponent with a viable shot. This player is beating the opponent to the shot.
He is great at beating the opponent to the shot. It means that he is consistent, and the opponent usually makes the mistake first.
