Defensive play refers to one of many strategies that can be used in the game of billiards. In its most basic sense defensive play is a method of attempting to leave your opponent without a decent shot once your inning comes to an end. Defensive play is typically used when one is in a situation where there is no good shot. The goal, instead of being to pocket a ball, did you shoot in such a way that will leave your opponent with no decent shot either. The most optimal defense play is to set your opponent up as such that they have a high likelihood of committing a foul or scratch. This would give you ball in hand. Defensive plays important part playing safety.
It looks like Jim will need to make a defensive play here, he's got nothing.
