The term extension has two meaning in the world of cue sports. The first meaning of the term extension is rooted in tournament play and is used in a situation where players have limited time in which to make their shots. In such situations, an extension refers to a time-out, or any allowed extra time to make a shot. Limiting time, and the use of an extension, is common in televised play. The second meaning of extension is related to the length of ones cue, and refers to any aid used by a player to elongate his or her cue stick. A cue extension is usually affixed to the cue's butt via a screw into the base or by clipping around the end. A cue extension is more common in snooker due to the larger snooker tables, though extensions are used for pool as well.
His arms are so short and the snooker table is so big, so he has to use an extension on his cue.
