A player is considered in jail when he or she is on the receiving side of a safety situation where that player is faced with an impossible, or very difficult time of making a legal shot on the object ball. Used in one pocket, to put your opponent in jail means to leave the cue ball locked up in a particularly confining trap.
Jeff, you are in jail because no matter what you do, you are probably going to end up fouling.
