Definition of Kick

Kick is a billiards term that is a part of Billiard Technique Terminology.

Causing the cue-ball cue ball to contact one or more cushions before striking the object ball. In other words, a shot shot or safety safety where rather than shooting directly at your desired object ball, you shoot first into one or more rails, with the intention of rebounding into your object ball or balls. Similar to "rail-first rail first," except that "kick" generally implies either a longer path or a multiple rail rail path between cushion cushion contact and target, or to go to a cushion cushion first to enable striking an object ball from behind, whereas in a "rail-first rail first" shot shot the initial object ball contact would still be from the front, off a very near adjacent cushion cushion. Kick is also used to refer to a common phenomena called cling. Kick, in this sense of the word, refers to a phenomena caused by excessive chalk build up on the cue ball and object balls as such that extra friction is generated at contact. This causes the object ball to slightly veer from it's intended and expected trajectory. It can cause even the most basic shots to be missed.

See: cling, kick shot, skid, double for more on the meaning of "Kick".

Kick - Usage

Oh, there was too much chalk on the cue ball which caused some kick that made me miss the shot.
