The origin of the term kitchen is unknown, but is thought to date back to the 1800s. In this era, homes were generally not large enough to accommodate a separate room for a billiard table. Because of this, many homeowners decided put their billiard tables in their dining room which were adjacent to the actual kitchen. Placement of the billiard table had to be strategic since the dining rooms were not extremely large. This usually meant aligning the head string end of the table near the door or archway to the kitchen. This allowed the billiard players to literally stand in the kitchen or half in the kitchen while performing the break shot. See also: in the kitchen, baulk for more on the meaning of kitchen.
