Welcome to the billiard, pool, and snooker glossary of terms. This is the definition of Miscue as it relates to cue sports. You can also view the entire billiard dictionary.
A miscue occurs when the cue strikes the cue ball improperly and slides off. The cue's tip essentially slips off of the cue ball causing the cue's force to slide to the side and be deferred, instead of transferring to the cue ball directly. The cue tip typically slips to either side of center, or above or below the equator of the cue ball. This causes a flimsy feeling hit due to the force of the stroke being transferred either to one of the sides, or the top or bottom, rather than striking it straight on. A miscue almost always results in a missed shot that goes nowhere close to the intended target object ball. A miscue is caused by lack of chalk on the pool cue tip, a poorly maintained cue tip that is in bad condition, and the failure of the player to shoot straight through the cue ball because of steering.
Ouch. That was a horrible miscue on the cue ball.
