Open break is a billiard term that refers to a requirement in certain games by which a player must drive a minimum of four object balls out of the rack and to the cushions, or pocket at least one ball in order for the shot to be legal. The open break rule is common in some pocket billiard rulesets, and less common in others. You must consult individual game rules. In some games, failure to meet the open break requirements results in a breaking violation.
