Rest - Billiard Term Definition

Rest Definition

Rest refers to either a hand bridge or a mechanical bridge, but especially a set of mechanical bridges used in snooker, English billiards, and blackball. The rest may be used when a player can not comfortably make a shot using his or her hand bridge. It gets its name from the fact that the cue stick rests on the bridge while the stroke is taking place. It should be noted that most British style rests differ from traditional North American rests both in shape and form. British style rest sticks take the form of the spider, swan, goose neck, and the cross. Rests may also take the shape of the rarer and often unsanctioned hook.
