Welcome to the billiard, pool, and snooker glossary of terms. This is the definition of Running English as it relates to cue sports. You can also view the entire billiard dictionary.
Running english is a type of english that imparts sidespin on a cue ball that caroms from a rail when contacted on an angle in such a way that spins with, rather than against, the ball's natural direction of travel and momentum. The angle of deflection of the cue ball from the rail is normally wider than if the shooting player used no english. Also, because the cue ball is rolling, rather than sliding, against the rail, it's angle of deflection will be far more consistent. Running english has a spin in the same direction of the Carom, with the result of slightly speeding up the cue ball. The cue ball may also "grab" the rail temporarily (via friction) and widen the angle of the bounce. Running english works as such that if the shooting player is angling in to a rail that is to the left of the shot, then the application of right english to the cue ball would be considered running english in that situation, and vice versa. Running side is commonly used in British context. Because of the consistency of the carom with running english, it is a routinely used type of english. Runnning english is the opposite of reverse english.
You should have applied some running english on that one.
