Split has several meanings as related to cue sports. In pool, a split is a type of shot in which two object balls are contacted by the cue ball in near simultaneous fashion as such that to the naked eye, the cue ball hit both balls at the same time. In many sets of rules, the split is a foul if one of the two object balls is a legal target and one is not. In a break shot context, split refers to the degree to which the rack of balls is dispersed after the break shot is complete. In a snooker context, a split is a shot that sends the cue ball in to a cluster or pack of reds to develop them. A minimum of one split is typically required in each frame, since the original rack of reds does not allow for any reliable pots.
You just did a split shot on a non legal ball. That is a foul.
