Definition of Texas Express Rules

Texas Express Rules is a billiards term that is a part of Game Rule Terminology.

The term Texas Express Rules refers to variations on the push out rule in nine ball and it's derived games.

Historically, most nine ball rules allowed participants to "push out" multiple times during a game. Around the 1980s, variations on the push-out rule began to appear whereby it was only allowed on the shot immediately after the break shot. By 1990 this new push-out rule had become ubiquitous and any additional rules appended to the push-out rule were collectively referred to as "Texas express" rules.

It is named Texas Express because Texas is the supposed state of origin of the name, and the state where the drive toward speeding up of the game of 9 ball (which prompted push out rule changes) originated.

In North America today, Texas Express push-out rules dominate the way 9 ball is played and is the variant incorporated into the official rules maintained by the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) and its affiliate organizations like the Billiard Congress of American (BCA).
