Welcome to the billiard, pool, and snooker glossary of terms. This is the definition of Gentlemens Call as it relates to cue sports. You can also view the entire billiard dictionary.
Gentlemen's call refers to a more informal version of bar pool's call everything, no slop, or call shot versions of a particular billiard game. In gentlemen's call, the shooting player need not call his or her very obvious shots. An obvious shot would be any shot where the very act of aiming the shot allows the other players to see clearly which object ball is being targeted and which pocket the shot is intended for. Some shots, however, are not as obvious, such as carom shots, kick shots, combination shots, and bank shots, and thus, must be called by the shooting player. It should also be noted that in gentlemens call billiard games, the shots which fall in to the obvious category will vary depending on the mutual skill level, maturity, and shot planning and selection of the players. Under gentlemens call rules, the opponent has the right to interrupt the shooting player before the shot is executed to inquire about the shooting players intention for the shot.
Hey, you have to call your shot big guy. Ah, no, I do not, since the house rules state that games should be played with a gentlemens call, rather than strict call shot rules.
