Skid is a British term used to refer to the phenomenon known in North America as cling. Skid occurs when a cue ball that is heavily soiled with chalk residue strikes a cue ball and sends it in a path that is slightly different from that which is expected. This is caused from excessive friction created from the chalk residue, and can cause the simplest of shots to be missed.
It was skid that caused me to miss that damn shot.
